The field contains more than 80 active geysers and fumaroles spread across roughly three square kilometers of silica terraces and thermal pools. Peak activity occurs between 06:00 and 07:30, when the temperature differential between superheated groundwater and frozen morning air drives steam columns as high as six meters. By mid-morning, rising ambient temperatures reduce plume visibility, and many vents fall dormant until the following dawn. The geothermal reservoir beneath El Tatio is fed by precipitation and snowmelt from the surrounding volcanic peaks, which percolates through fractured rhyolite and andesite layers before encountering magma-heated rock at depth. Surface water temperatures in the larger pools range from 60 to 85 degrees Celsius, but the chemistry varies widely—some pools are acidic with dissolved sulfates, while others carry neutral bicarbonate-rich water that supports thermophilic algae and cyanobacteria.

Today, the site functions solely as a protected geothermal monument, drawing approximately 100,000 visitors annually who arrive in the pre-dawn cold to witness the ephemeral steam columns that vanish with the sun.
